Battersby, Rachel M. - 65, lifelong resident of Upper Township and Ocean City, passed away (November 27th, 2019) following a lengthy illness. A 1972 graduate of Holy Spirit High School, Absecon and a 1976 Business Major graduate of Glassboro State College (Rowan University).
After graduation, Rachel pursued a successful career in business and banking, retiring in February 2019 as Vice President and Director of Regulatory Compliance for Sun National Bank, Vineland.
When Rachel wasn’t hard at work, she lovingly devoted herself to her family and friends, community service, was a voracious reader, enjoyed attending the theater and was an extensive world traveler. Rachel had seen the pyramids along the Nile, walked along the Great Wall of China, sailed riverboats along the Danube and Yangtze Rivers, twice crossed the Atlantic Ocean by ship and journeyed to such exotic places as Casablanca, Rio, Mumbai and Hong Kong. Summers were generally reserved for entertaining family and friends at her home in Ocean City.
Rachel was predeceased by her brothers Butch and James, and parents Clarence and Marion. She is survived by sister Marlena (Doug) Pittman of Westmont, NJ and her brothers Gene (Robin) of Westhampton, NJ, John (Karen) of Chambersburg, PA and Mark (Carol) of Mishawaka, IN.
She is also survived by many nephews and nieces including Trevor (Jenn) of Norfolk, VA, John (Stacy) of Marietta, GA, Stephen (Sharon), of Pennsville, NJ, Janene (Drew) of Somers Point, NJ, Devon (Jon) Fleury of Collegeville Pa and Tyler of Mishawaka, IN, an Aunt Gretchen (Al) Collins of Dothan, Al; and several great nieces and nephews and cousins near and far.
Graveside service will be private with internment to be alongside other family members at Seaside Cemetery, Palermo, NJ.
Rachel expressed hope that her death does not result in the death of any flowers, rather, if friends and family choose, perhaps in the spring to scatter some flower seeds or plant some bulbs, so that they may be reminded of her when they blossom.
Additionally she asked no donations or gifts made in her name, but if her passing moves anyone to generosity let them make such gifts, but let the reason for their kindness remain unnamed. Arrangements are through Langley-Loveland Funeral Home, Tuckahoe, New Jersey.

I was a friend of Rachel’s since 1988, when we worked together at RGIS. After she moved from Vineland, we did not see each other too often, but kept in contact with Christmas cards and such. We reconnected in the last three years and saw each other periodically. We shared a love of travel and I was always excited to hear of her most recent adventure. She treated me to a visit to the theater last year and we enjoyed spending time over a good show and a nice meal. We had been in contact and made plans to meet several times over the summer, but due to a scheduling conflict, or her not feeling well, we never were able to meet up. She was optimistic when we last corresponded in late October, but I guess the good Lord had other plans. I will miss my friend and send deepest sympathies to her family members that she held so dear.

I am saddened to have to send this to you and your family at this time. I knew something wasn't right when I didn't hear back from you. You were such a great friend and boss over the years. You have taught me many..many things. I am really going to miss our lunches, long talks, lessons on banking, lectures on what I should do, talks about my kids, trips to conferences etc. You have helped me carve my career path to what it is today and I have watched you help develop many others as well. You were always tough, at the same time selfless. I am truly going to miss you Rachel. I know I have thanked you time and time again but could never thank you enough. You are an inspiration and I am honored to have shared paths with you!

Dear Rachel,
I am so deeply saddened to hear you are no longer with us, but know you are up in heaven smiling down. You were my first “boss” , colleague, and most importantly great friend to me for 20 years. From our countless laughs at Cape Savings, game nights, lunch outings to our many mini adventures, I will forever remember them all. I always admired your quiet strength, humility, and generosity. You always encouraged me to go beyond my comfort zone and supported me in everything, weather it was for advancing in my career or lending an ear, you gave it to me straight, no fluff. I will forever be grateful. I will truly miss you, Rachel. Bob and I and the girls send our love and prayers to your family. I pray all the beautiful memories they have of you will help them through....
Much love to you in heaven and your family ,
Love Gina

My family and I send our condolences to Rachel's relatives. My best friend for over 50 years, Rachel was generally quiet about her own successes ,but she proudly shared the accomplishments of her family members. She was a devoted , generous, loyal , intelligent and witty person , and I cherish each and every day that we spent together. My college roommate, maid of honor, beloved "aunt" to Lauren and Adam, I will miss her forever. Rest easy , my beloved pinochle partner. We love you.
