Obituary for Lorraine S "Rainy" Dowling (Shuman)

Lorraine S "Rainy" Dowling (Shuman)
Rainy Dowling (Dec’d 08/16/16), a one of a kind character.

An active kid, Rainy is a legend of Somers Point, where she was born and raised. Rainy was a three sport varsity athlete at Ocean City HS. The third of five children she earned the name "Dirty Girt" from her father after countless hours of getting greasy working on cars with her three brothers. She was lauded of having one of the fastest cars in HS, kind of funny, but for those who knew her. That was our mom. She was different, and those who met her never forgot her. Over the years, when we were kids, we had stopped to help countless people broken down. Her knowledge of cars was deep. She even taught me how to change a transmission among many other things. She was renowned for her easy going attitude and her work ethic.

Rainy was a victim of early onset dementia, just after retiring from Lenox China, a 30 year career. She was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She did not get to enjoy retirement as we had hoped. She did have fun, but faded too soon. She always carried with her a pendant of St Jude, the patron saint of lost causes. It's fitting knowing who she was.

She is survived by her sister Jeanie, brother Bob, daughter Deb and son George. She was predeceased by her husband George, son Don from the Tuckahoe Tire Barn and brothers John and Harry. As her children, we learned kindness and the important to help others. These traits and others, we will share with her four grandchildren.

Her hobbies included coaching kid sports, softball, and the annual Tuckahoe canoe race. In the late 70’s she even won a first prize for Powder Puff Stock-car driving. Not sure you all knew this. We had her trophy in the living room for years.

Her favorite foods were all things ice cream, coconut, or peanut butter related. And garlic salt was her secret ingredient. Her mac and cheese is still the best there is. We all can look back now and smile of all the things she burned on the grill and where we had to order pizza instead. There are too many stories.

A longtime resident of Petersburg, NJ, she was active in the Upper Twp Rescue Squad and in the Boy Scout Troop 55, where she was given an Honorary Boy Scout title. She was an Asst. Girl Scout Leader for Troop 597 for many years, were she will be especially remembered for bringing lobster to one of the girl’s camp outs. They were really roughing it.

Her legacy will be remembered for her backyard mechanics, helpfulness and good laughs. There was only one Rainy. She loved life. She cherished friendships greatly.

The best friend to all, may we impart her qualities in our life to make this nutty world a bit better.
As her children we learned to be ourselves, to be kind to strangers, to work hard and laugh.

Services and interment will be private. Visits are welcomed at Head of the River Cemetery, section D.

In lieu of flowers, supporting contributions in Rainy’s memory may be made to the Tuckahoe Boy Scout Troop 55, POB 55, Tuckahoe, NJ 08250.
