Obituary for Kittie King (Leaming)

King, Kittie (nee Leaming), age 94 of Steelmantown, passed on March 10th at Shore Medical Center. Born in Philadelphia on June 13, 1920 to Dr. Lewis Cresse Leaming and Georgia (Wells) Leaming; the youngest of three children. Her brothers, Coleman Fisher Leaming and Rev. Lewis Cresse Leaming, preceded her.
While attending U.S.C. in California, she became fascinated with flying. Ultimately applying and being accepted into the newly formed Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), graduating in the 43-4 class at Avenger Field in Sweetwater Texas. She was one of over a thousand women chosen out of the thousands that applied to fly military aircraft during WWII. In 1977, the WASP were all given Veteran status. In 2010 she was awarded, along with all WASP, a Congressional Gold Medal at a special ceremony at the Capital in Washington DC.
It was in California she met her husband Robert Walden King, a former movie stunt pilot and, during the war, a civilian instructor for the military. They were married in 1944 in Los Angeles. They had two children, Robert Leaming King (1945-1996) and Kittie R. Naegler (1947-). Mr. King died in 1953 from cancer.
Kittie is survived by her daughter, granddaughter Kittie P. Walton, and her great-granddaughter Alicia M. Walton.
Services for Kittie were privately held. Condolences and memories can be shared at www.LangleyLovelandFuneralHome.com.
