Obituary for Corinne Frances Olson (Post)

Corinne Frances Olson (Post)
CORINNE FRANCES POST-OLSON
Born June 22, 1927
Died April 21, 2014

Corinne Frances Post-Olson, 86 of Estell Manor, passed away on Monday, April 21, at the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona, New Jersey.

Born in Jersey City, she moved to Risley, New Jersey, now Estell Manor, in 1931. The four-year-old Corinne traveled by train with her parents, Virginia and Leroy Post, and older step-sister Marian to their new farm in Risley. In a recent letter to her family, she wrote, “I loved this place ever since the first minute I stepped off the train.”

As a teenager in World War II, she served, along with her father, as an airplane spotter at Head of the River-Estell Manor. Taught by her father to hunt, she explored the woods and swamps, learning the names of native plants such as Trailing Arbutus, Indian Pipe, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, and Lady’s Slipper that she later taught her children.

Corinne and her next-door neighbor Harold Olson were married in 1944. She and her husband built and began a chicken farm in Estell Manor in the early 1950s, and farmed continuously for 20 years. As a young mother, she began reporting Estell Manor news for the Vineland Times Journal as a correspondent. Initially paid 10 cents an inch for her stories, the self-taught reporter-photographer soon went to work full-time for the Journal, and later covered a four-county area in South Jersey for the Philadelphia Bulletin and Associated Press. Loving newspaper work, she was a journalist for 16 years.

In 1969, Corinne obtained her real estate license, worked for several firms to gain experience, and then, becoming a broker, established her own business. Serving generations of families throughout the area, she operated Olson Real Estate for 45 years. She was recently recognized as “Realtor Emeritus” by the National Association of Realtors.

If a life can be measured by depth of caring and commitment to family and community, Corinne’s life was extraordinary. Contributing to the community she loved all her life, she served as a Cub Scout den mother; President of the Estell Manor Parent Teacher’s Association; and a member of the Estell Manor Planning Board. She and Florence Tummon began the first hot lunch program at the Estell Manor School, where they served a different Campbell’s soup each day. For nine years, she served on the Estell Manor Board of Education, and chaired the dedication of the addition to the school in 1975.

Corinne only recently resigned from her position as Chairperson of the Estell Manor Historic Preservation Commission, after serving many years. Her daughter Linda Janney succeeded her on the Commission. In November 2013, she was honored by both the Estell Manor Historic Preservation Commission and the Estell Manor City Council for her lifetime of community service. At the time of her passing, she was a member and Trustee of Friends of the Park, a group dedicated to the promotion of the Atlantic County Parks System.

Corinne is predeceased by son Glenn. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Harold; six children and their spouses: Harold and Jane Olson, Judy and Brian Olesen, Jim and Karel Olson, Allen Olson, Linda and Ronald Janney, and Joy Smith; 16 grandchildren: Keri, Bryan, KarelAnn, Audra, Nathan, Kim, Ronnie, Jim, Ryan, Randy, Katie, Rory, Eric, Rich, Shane, and Cody; and 15 great-grandchildren: Christina, Gianna, Benjamin, Hailey, James, Tre, Aiden, Joseph, Evan, Taylor Rose, Ronald, Brody, Chase, Daniel, and Reece. She remembered every birthday.

Private services for the immediate family are being conducted by Langley-Loveland Funeral Home, 2315 Rt 50, Tuckahoe NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Corinne Olson’s name can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
